For me the 2008 National Educational Computing Confernce (NECC) was about self-directed professional development and how teachers manage their learning of new technologies and classroom integration. ISTE (International Society of Technology in Education) has publicized the new NETS (National Educational Technology Standards) for Teachers at http://tinyurl.com/2ud5ky, which provides a framework for teachers as they transition their classroom into a digital-age learning environment.

There are many opportunities for teachers to stay abreast of new trends and classroom integration. Here is a list of several options teachers may have in staying connected. This is by no means a comprehensive list and should be used only as a starting point. Try one and when you are comfortable, add another resource to your repertoire.

  • Local Technology Coach – Start with your local building technology support and find out what opportunities your local district and/or regional support center can provide.
  • Blogs – There are teachers, just like you, who are writing about those issues affecting you, your grade level and particular curriculum. Ex: http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com/
  • Social Networks such as Ning – These can be a great place to lurk and/or post questions to topics of interest to you. Ex: http://www.classroom20.com/

On July 23rd and 24th, LeadershipEDGE participants attended Focus on the Future 2008:  Change in Action at the Kearney Holiday Inn.  On the first evening, participants enjoyed an exclusive three-hour dinner with Ray McNulty, the Vice President of the International Center for Leadership in Education.

After the dinner administrators were grouped into pods. These pods will meet four times during the 2008-09 school year to discuss implementation of learning.  They will also visit a colleague’s school for half a day.

Another entity of LeadershipEDGe is that a trained cognitive coach from ESU 10 will assist participants with gaining clarity in learning.

If you are interested in joining a LeadershipEDGe pod, please contact the Professional Development staff.

Picture it! You’re at home in the middle of January. You are getting ready for your workshop at ESU 10. The snow is falling. All the schools in your area have called off school for the day. You are nervously waiting for a phone call from someone at ESU 10 to call off the workshop. That phone call never comes, so you make your way to Kearney only to find that you are the only one in the parking lot. Why didn’t you get that call?

At ESU 10 we rely heavily on ODIE for all workshop registrations and contact information for schools and teachers. Please take a few minutes to update your contact information in ODIE. To do this, go to https://odie.esu10.org and log in. On the left, click on My Account Info. In this window, you will see a little pencil at the top right side of the box. Click this pencil to edit your profile. Please fill in all the information. If you click the private checkbox, your profile will be private to everyone except the workshop organizers. This is a secure site, and we do not sell your information to anyone. The more information we have, the better we can serve you!
