Response to Intervention (RtI), a general education initiative, is an individualized, comprehensive assessment and intervention process.  This process utilizes a problem-solving framework to identify and serve students with academic and/or behavioral needs. On September 20, 2010, ESU 10 Professional Development Coordinators and School Psychologists will be facilitating the following trainings to help teachers and administrators better understand the RtI process.

RtI 101 -  9:00 am - 12:00 pm
This session is intended to assist teachers and administrators who have not previously attended an ESU 101 RtI training, and/or those who would like background in the RtI process. It would be especially useful for new RtI team members to bring them up to speed with current team members. An overview of the RtI process will be provided.

Lunch Provided - 12:00 pm - 12:45 pm

Data 101 - 12:45 pm - 3:00 pm
This session is intended to assist teachers and administrators in analyzing data. ESU 10 staff will demonstrate how to read and interpret DIBELS and AIMSweb data. Participants will learn how to read and interpret students' progress monitoring graphs and make decisions based on
data.

Participants may attend one or both of these sessions in person or via their distance learning system. Register for these trainings on ODIE @ https://odie.esu10.org

Workshop days include November 4, 5 and 6, 2010. An opportunity for districts to gather early data for each student in fourth, eighth, and eleventh grades is offered again this fall at ESU 10. Each student paper is assessed separately for each trait by two trained writing teachers for a minimum of 12 individual evaluations per paper.

Analytical scoring is designed to provide teachers, students, parents, and districts with disaggregated information regarding strengths and areas for improvement in each trait for the individual student and aggregated by class. Data  gathered from this workshop will assist with instructional focus and student practice before the Statewide Writing Assessment in February. In past years, according to the participants, the professional conversations during analytical scoring have been valuable for planning instruction when they return to their classrooms.

Administrators or teachers will need to request instructions and writing prompts for the participating grade level(s). Only districts that send one evaluator per 35 student papers per grade level will be eligible for this analytical scoring opportunity. Student writing samples will be due at ESU 10 by Friday, October 22, 2010. Register for this training on odie @https://odie.esu10.org

Please contact Denise O'Brien at 237-5927 or dobrien@esu10.org for additional information.

I have given up making reading assignments.  Students either don’t read the assignment, they read it and can’t remember what they read, or they don’t seem to understand the important information from what they have read.  It’s easier to just cover the information in class instead of asking students to read it.”

Sound familiar? Frustration with students’ inability to use reading to learn is all too common. Students need the opportunity to become strategic readers so they will be able to process and apply information they have read. The reading tools provided in this workshop will help students develop the critical skills needed to become competent, strategic readers. Once students learn how to use and apply the tools, they will begin to use them independently as they encounter a variety of texts.

A workshop for 4-12 grade content area teachers will take place on September 29, 2010.  Register for this training on odie @ https://odie.esu10.org
